* Students majoring in folklore must consult annually with the programme coordinator before choosing their courses for the coming year.
For purposes of degree requirements, Folklore courses at the 200 and 300 level are clustered into the following groups. All are three credit unless indicated otherwise.
Group A (Atlantic Canada Regional Studies): 203, 207, 209, 231, 233, 241, 243, 253, 291, 320 (six credit), 340 (six credit), 380 (six credit)
Group B (Folklore Themes and Genres): 201, 223, 251, 261, 263, 332 (six credit), 378 (six credit)
NOTE: Nine (9) credits of Folklore, including (a) Folklore 101, (b) one of 107, 113, or 117, and (c) three (3) more credits at the 200 level are prerequisites for all courses in the 300 and 400 levels, unless otherwise indicated. Students who intend to major in Folklore are encouraged to take 101, one of 107, 113, or 117, and a 200 level course during their first year.
Thirty (30) credits in Folklore, of which twelve (12) must be from the 300-level or above. (Note prerequisites for 300 level courses)
(a) Major with a Minor: The Major in Folklore is comprised of 42 credits for the Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA), or 42 to 48 for the Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies (BACS), broken down as follows: FOLK 101; one (1) of FOLK 113, 107, or 117; 6 credits at the 400 level; and 30 (BA) or 30-36 (BACS) additional credits (at least 12 each from Group A and Group B), of which at least 12 must be from the 300 level or above.
(b) Double Major: A Double Major programme with Folklore as the first major is comprised of 36 credits: FOLK 101; one (1) of FOLK 113, 107, or 117; 6 credits at the 400 level; and 24 additional credits (at least 9 each from Group A and Group B), of which at least 9 must be from the 300 level or above.
A Double Major programme with Folklore as the second major is comprised of 24 credits: FOLK 101; one (1) of FOLK 113, 107, or 117; and 18 additional credits (at least 6 each from Group A and Group B), of which at least 6 must be from the 300 level or above.
(c) Area Major: An Area Major with Folklore as the first major is comprised of 24 credits: FOLK 101; one (1) of FOLK 113, 107, or 117; 6 credits at the 400 level; and 12 additional credits (at least 3 each from Group A and Group B), of which at least 3 must be from the 300 level or above.
Students interested in having Folklore as their second or third major in the Area Major programme should consult with the programme coordinator.
(d) Minor: A Minor in Folklore is comprised of 18 credits: students are encouraged to take at least 6 of these at the 300 level or above, being aware of prerequisites.
Students in the BA or BACS programme wishing to minor in ethnomusicology must take at least eighteen (18) credits. The following nine credits are core requirements:
The remaining nine credits for the minor can be made up from any course named or cross-listed to Ethnomusicology (ETHM).
Any student may earn a certificate in ethnomusicology; it does not require that you be registered for a degree program. Students wishing to earn a certificate in ethnomusicology must take at least twenty-four (24) credits (which may also be used towards a degree). The following twelve credits are core requirements:
