Here, students study performance, music history, ethnomusicology, and ethnochoreology, amongst other aspects of music and dance. Students study performance with visiting and resident tutors who represent the cream of performance in Ireland and beyond. In addition to solo and ensemble performance, students engage in vocational studies directly relevant to traditional music and dance, enabling the student to engage the real word of professional performance. For example, students record CDs and videos, use digital media, write business plans, plan tours, and organize performances. Academic courses are balanced with courses designed to meet students' future career needs as professional performers.

An elite institution for higher education in music and drama, RSAMD is unique for its Department of Scottish music through which students study traditional music and performance. Students concentrate on developing their performance skills on their chosen instrument, and study related topics, like singing, group-work, and dance. With added opportunities for outreach work and tours both within Scotland and abroad, the program offers a unique training for traditional musicians.

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is the only institution of higher education that operates through the medium of the Scots Gaelic language. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Sleat peninsula on the Isle of Skye, SMO is committed to being a center of excellence for the development and enhancement of the Gaelic language, culture, and heritage. Exchange students develop their Gaelic fluency while earning a certificate in the language. Oral and written Gaelic skills are emphasized in courses such as geography, history, song, Gaelic literature, and media studies. Students will also work for three weeks in a Gaelic community in order to develop practical, career-related skills while practicing their spoken and written skills.
